Open Gov Hub Blog: September 2023

The Return of the Open Gov Hub Monthly Blog: Long overdue, but hopefully worth the wait!

Welcome back to the Open Gov Hub Monthly Blog, which is long overdue but hopefully worth the wait. With the Hub celebrating our 11th Anniversary on October 19th, it is fitting that this "Steel Year" relaunches this communication. This year's theme is all about rebuilding, a fitting tribute to our unwavering dedication to community, programming, and, most importantly, our valued Members.  At the Open Gov Hub, we are more than just a space; we are amplifiers of change and collaboration. Our blog serves as a powerful platform to not only narrate the Open Gov Hub's remarkable journey but also to spotlight our Members and the extraordinary work they do. So, without further ado, our September 2023 blog post!

Exciting September 2023 Highlights at the Open Gov Hub

As we bid farewell to September and welcome the fall season, it's time to reflect on the remarkable and enriching experiences our vibrant community of Hubbers enjoyed throughout the month. The Open Gov Hub buzzed with activity, featuring a diverse range of events that brought members together for learning, networking, and giving back. Best of all, every single one of these events was completely free for our dedicated Hubbers. Let's look at what transpired in our community last month.

Our September started on a fashionable note with a Clothing Swap event. Members had the chance to exchange clothing items, declutter their wardrobes, and discover unique and stylish additions to their own. It was an eco-friendly and budget-conscious way to refresh your wardrobe while connecting with fellow Hubbers. Climate and sustainability is one of the 2023 Core Themes for the Hub.

At the Open Gov Hub, we believe in the power of knowledge. Our first Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon event allowed our community to contribute to a global information resource. Hubbers came together to edit, expand, and improve Wikipedia articles, enhancing the accuracy and accessibility of information for all.

A highlight of the month was our partnership with Unfunded List and Adeso, offering a unique opportunity to make a real impact on humanitarian causes. At this event, Adeso provided a free lunch and training on how to review grant proposals using custom software. Participants were assigned real grant proposals from community support organizations in the Global South. This was a chance to network, improve philanthropic skills, and support initiatives for women's and girls' education, sustainable agriculture, and climate change.

Video content storytelling is a powerful way for nonprofits to connect with their audience, and this month, we had the privilege of hosting Ryder Haske, partner and creative director at People's Television. His insights on nonprofit approaches to video storytelling offered valuable lessons for those looking to make a meaningful impact in the digital age. This amazing event was brought to us by Hub Member, CoRE.

Our dynamic community also showcased its expertise with member-hosted events. 'Labstorms' by Feedback Labs and a 'Lobbying Masterclass' hosted by Open Secrets provided unique learning and networking opportunities for all. In addition to these events, our Hubbers also enjoyed our regular slate of programming. From the delicious Wednesday PBJ Days to the lively New Member Happy Hour and our complimentary Muffin Mondays, there's always something happening at Open Gov Hub.

As a reminder, all this programming was free for our members! If you would like more information on joining our community and enjoying these incredible benefits, you can learn more here.

For a blog that is coming out of retirement, we hope this wasn't half-bad! Please be on the lookout for more exciting blogs every month. In October, we have the 11th Anniversary of the Open Gov Hub to look forward to. This event is open to the public, and we would love to celebrate with as many of you as possible.
